Onshore Sector
Here, the drilling is performed on land using traditional rigs. It is easy to manage logistics, have lower costs, and the facility set-up is quicker. These facilities are common in resource-rich countries and are often located near supporting infrastructure. Technologies used here include vertical, horizontal, and hydraulic fracturing, or fracking.
Offshore Sector
Here, the Drilling occurs in marine environments, ranging from shallow waters to the deep sea. Requires specialized platforms like fixed, floating, or submersible types. It incurs higher costs and has more complexity, due to harsh ocean conditions and logistical challenges. It offers access to large, previously unreachable reserves, supporting long-term production.
